Welcome to the Department of Mathematics at Simon Fraser University.

We have compiled information on our website to help you get started if you are arriving directly from school or college, or returning as a mature student. In particular, please check out the information regarding the Q Placement Test, the Calculus Readiness Test, the Survival Guide 1st Year, and the Workshop. In addition, we have valuable information for the experienced student to establish and complete their academic plan. In particular, please read through the Survival Guide 2nd-4th Year and consult the Academic Plan and Advising Schedule before you plan your academic program. There are also many social and math activities offered throughout the year by the Math Student Union and there are of course Putnam Activities happening right here on top of Burnaby mountain. Lastly, read through the Awards section to find out what awards are being offered in our department. Browse around and get informed!

Our faculty consist of professors and lecturers who value research and teaching. You will find them approachable, helpful and knowledgeable. Do not hesitate to approach a faculty and ask for guidance, whether it is with your academic plan, choosing a course, or understanding mathematical material, and they will point you in the right direction.

If you are a student seeking a career in mathematics you have come to the right place. At SFU the student has all the courses needed to attain expertise in the exciting fields of applied and pure mathematics. Starting from the calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations the student can go on to ponder the mysteries of number theory, the geometry of curved spaces, areas with important applications in data security, computer design and cosmology. At the same time the student will learn how to use modern computer techniques in many of these areas.
