Prerequisite:

MATH 150 or 151 (or equivalent) or MACM 101, or MATH 154/157 with a grade at least B+. Students with credit for MATH 232 cannot take MATH 240 for further credit.

Calendar Description:

Linear equations, matrices, determinants. Real and abstract vector spaces, subspaces and linear transformations; basis and change of basis. Eigenvalues and eigenvectors; diagonalization. Inner products and orthogonality; least squares problems. Applications. The course has a more theoretical emphasis than MATH 232, including proving true statements and giving counterexamples.

In addition to regularly scheduled lectures, students registered in this course are encouraged to come for assistance to the Algebra Workshop (Burnaby), or Math Open Lab (Surrey).
